Crossbow smithing isn't better than buying good crossbows, without taking the whole infrastructure required to do it into consideration. Also, no race has a multiplier to smithing, so learning it is extremely slow. You're better off crafting weapons, doing a run for skellies city, selling weapons and buying crossbows. Been working really well on plain terrain and single target kills. I get completely rekt if a whole squad rushes me with 100+ speed though, like the beak things or skin spiders.
