Shock infantry - imperial manevilions, Sturgian breakers, Aserai guards, essentially all units with big enough sticks or axes are built to be anti-cav. While not really a tactic on its own they absolutly shred melee cavalry. Shield wall + archers - get shield infantry and archers, surround your archers with the shields.

The new system barely works and focuses on sorting by equipment, but has serious limitations when you want to separate lower-tier troops for xp-farming. You want to use the icons, (particularly helmet for more armor) to separate more armored troops from recruits/ low tier of the same type into separate groups.

I only use them as my mainstay. Ironically their best infantry happens to be their tier 6 ranged unit. The Battanian Fian Champ has a high two handed skill and a decent sword. Not only will they tear through other infantry, but they can block a lot of attacks too, making them formidable swordsman.
