Duramax ticking noise.
The ticking sound could be a number of things that have already been described, but the combination of ticking/chirping could be as simple as your belt and/or idler arm. I see you are in ND. If your belt is old coupled with the cold temps, that could also describe your problem. It's a simple idea I know.
For the un-informed, this is when your beloved engine starts to make an EXTREMELY annoying, loud tapping (ticking, clacking, etc.) sound similar to a valve or lifter tapping on a gasser. Bam engine is silent, running quieter and better than ever.The noise usually is most noticeable at the rear of the driver's side front wheel well. Customers may also comment about hearing a tick noise inside the vehicle at idle such as when sitting at a drive through window. All 6600 Duramax™ diesel engines have this condition; however, some are more audible than others.
2023 6.6 NOISE QUESTION. Hey guys, just bought my 1st NEW Duramax (EVER) and have a question. The truck is a 2023 GMC AT4 HD! Have owned many used high mile 6.6 trucks and still have a 16 Denali 2500HD with 209k miles that was put on a diet.

The injector ballance rates are very good, as the truck has 40k on it. I can't locate it, it's easily heard from both passenger and drivers side of truck. It isn't noisy any other time.

It only seems to happen between 1,000 and 1500 rpm. My 16 LML made a similar noise sometimes, but this L5P seems to do it more. It's not the typewriter tick, that's for sure.

Pop-off pressures are (don't quote me on this) around 1300-1700lbs. for most diesel engines IIRC, so they can get a little noisy, especially when it's cold out.
