When the enhancement of a weapon has standard, heavy, keen, or quality on the weapon, you are able to apply the buffs like magic grease or a spell buff like scholars armament. When you enhance a weapon to do magic damage by default, it loses its ability to be buffed by items/spells. To use the ashes of war on your off-hand (LH), you must hold it with both hands by the event button (E by default, Y on screen) + left click. Now you can use your skill button to activate the off-hands' ashes of war then go back to dual wielding. On a side note, if I press "event button + left click," it will hold the LH armament with both hands.
