Leech Lake is located immediately east of White Pass near the Cascade Crest Trail on the north side of Highway 12. This high elevation lake is open to fly fishing only. It is usually ice free by early June. Facilities include a U.S. Forest Service campground and boat launch, but use of boat motors is prohibited.

The unseasonably warm months of December and January have caused some good early ice conditions to deteriorate and the thaw freeze cycles have opened up large cracks and ice heaves on area lakes.Jan 31, 2024 · Again we stress safety and want everyone to have a safe memorable fishing experience. Unfortunately, Ice and Snow conditions on the south end of Leech Lake have made all travel unsafe. Slush varies from 6”-24” throughout the area. Additionally, snow levels are 20”-30” deep. New cracks are frequently forming and flooding water onto the ice, probably due to the extreme weight of the snowpack. No travel is advised, of any kind.
