For straight forward single class builds to fulfil this role you can look at sword saints, mutation warriors and particularly bloodrager primalists. All three of these are "better" than a straight fighter pound for pound. If I was to plump for one sure fire recommendation it would be a bloodrager primalist wielding a reach weapon such as a glaive.

So when you have sneak attack (which requires a dedicated build; most arcane caster don't get sneak attack natively), you can use non-cantrip ray spells of higher level, which give you much better results. So cantrips are either complete crap (w/o sneak) or just sort of crap (w sneak).
