305 posts · Joined 2012. #6 · Apr 8, 2012. I have been shooting 24g's of A2400 , now for about 6 weeks, that was shortly after getting my GBL 45/70! I am casting my own 405g Boolit's, using a Lee 405 standard base mold! Using Wheel weights and dropping in water as soon as cast! Loading as poured and not sizing!

The following is an introduction to building .45-70 paper patched bullet (PPB) cartridges, using real black powder and a bore riding PPB. I like 11 grains of Unique behind a 500 gr Lee boolit, my crony says 1100+FPS. Great load in my Sharps and my Pedesorli Rem. The Heart of Dixie. I have fired hundreds of 405 gr cast bullets over 27/5744 in 45-70 rifles of various types for years with outstanding results. This is a BP (or a little hotter) level load. Larger 5744 doses can be used for strong actions, but I usually go with other powders for stiff loads.

If you load it to little you cause a high pressure problem, if you load it to much you cause a high pressure problem. Hodgdon does not even list a load with it. Personally I would not use Lil-gun in my 45-70.19570. The 5744 bottle states that it works on 45-70. I use 5744 in my Savage 10ML-II Muzzleloader and it works fine. ( Warning, do not use smokeless powder in any muzzleloader that is not designed to shoot smokeless!) 5744 is also used by 30-30 reloaders that shoot Lead Cast bullets.I place all reloaded cartridges into their associated containers after I finish seating bullets into all of the primed shells that I have filled with powder. Aug 4, 2018 · Cast boolits typically use faster powders than jacketed bullets do due to their greater ease in passage through the barrel. 4320 is a couple of steps faster than 4350. Powders burn best within their own particular pressure range. The 45-70 would not be able to achieve 4350's ideal pressure level with a cast boolit. Dec 16, 2011 · All you can get in there, with the option of a few grains of some faster rifle powder next to the primer to get the whole thing lit off. H870 by itself in a 45-70 only manages about 900 fps. With 5 grains of 4759 or similar you can get about 1200 fps and a lot less unburnt powder being thrown around. Remington, somewhere around 47.5 grains gives 1,861 fps from my 22" inch barrel. This load is fast enough, very accurate, and gives no pressure problems IN MY RIFLE! Of them, 5744 has given the best and most consistent results. The others left all kinds of unburnt grains in the bore and with low end loads were unsatisfactory performers.
