The thermostat housings are also a common failure point on 1.8L, so may as well do it while you're in there and have the cooling system open. FYI, coolant life is 5 yr/150k, so may as well just change that all too.When I had a squeal from the water pump, I could very slowly unscrew the coolant reservoir cap and the pitch would change.
