Doing a 408 conversion and need to know if I need a new crank. The "M" has a shorter stroke. I was told a while back that to use 400 pistons you have to use 400 rods because of the lengths between the 351M and 400 were different. But the same crank could be used as long as you change the pistons and rods. The rods are the same.

The Scat 9000-series "cast steel" cranks (and other manufacturer's corresponding components) are very low cost. Unless you happen to own a machine shop, they are a much cheaper option than cutting down a 400 crank to fit to a …

Now, presupposing the bore on the 351M is in good shape and consistent, and the 351M pistons are the same, I would mic the bore and old pistons and compare 'em to the 400 pistons.

Another way to remember the direction of rotation of the engine is to try to tighten the harmonic balancer bolt. Tightening it rotates the engine in its running direction.
