FYI, the in-game preview generator shows an area equivalent to a 1024 Preview Size and a 2 Preview Scale, or a 2048 Preview Size and a 1 Preview Scale. Both of those pairs of settings reveal the same map area, but the 2048x1 setting will take longer to process and generate a larger, more detailed map. Maps are made of burnable material. As of version 0.18.4, they may be damaged by fires or explosions: small or normal-sized maps will burn completely, big maps will leave a scorched map behind. Depending on the damage a map has taken (a random value), this will reveal the area in a radius of 25% to 90% of an intact big map.

The default has been tested extensively by the developers and will give a good, balanced experience.
