I have about 15 empty black soul gems, just got Azura's Star, and have about 100 other empty smaller gems. I am using a weapon that is fully charged and should trap a soul if killed within 15 seconds. And I have also tried Soul Trap and still nothing. Like I say, game is 100 percent unmodded. No I don't think you can, I just tried to trap a created Flame Atronach and a Familiar both came up with the message that they resisted the soul trap. They both also started to attack me when I attacked them.
