Enemies will often just hit you while your guard counter is warming up. Making almost useless, at least for me. They only seem to work in tandem with jump attacks and they have to be constant. Otherwise enemies will recharge their poise, and you'll be better off just wearing them down like any boss or enemy in DS3.

Just hit R2 after blocking with anything. You can also remove parry (or whatever Art it has equipped) from your shield so that you have no Art equipped.
