Cadillac Deville 2003 79,0000 miles V8 Northstar engine 32 valve 4.6 liter. I recently been offered a 2003 Cadillac for $1,500. its owned by a 85 year old and has the carfax history of the vehicle. Standard procedure for this problem is to pull the motor and replace the dual pan setup.The Northstar V8 actually predates the LS based engine by a solid 3 years, and it was more suited for Cadillacs FWD fleet at the time. It was also doing it's best to compete with European luxury and technology. Loved my 05 Bonneville GXP. Put 300xxx miles on that baby and never needed a head gasket.I'm curious where the Northstar V8 fall in terms of overall performance and reliability. Does this engine have a good reputation (like GM's 3.8) or is it a dog? (like GM's 3.4) Does it have piston slap? Is there much in the way of aftermarket mods available? Any good forums that talk about this engine?
93-99 Northstar has m11x1.5 headbolts 00-03 Northstar has M11x1.5 headbolts (Upper row are longer than 93-99) 04+ Northstar has M11x2.0 Headbolts (Upper row are same length as 00-03), also the 04+ don't fail nearly as much as the pre-04 Northstars, though we have had a few in the shop with stripped headbolts.
