Member. Nov 29, 2019. #1. A year ago I posted that my 4020 Propane tractor would not start in cold weather. It did it again in yesterdays snow storm. Turns over buy no fire. I checked the needle valve in the carb as it was a problem last year. Nope, still nice and clean. The first step to cure miss was to remove the pencil injectors and have them tested. All cracked/popped adequately, however, 2 of the injectors test pattern was not real good if pressure was added slowly so I replaced them. This did not cure the miss.

Provided the tractors does not have any external oil leakage (lines, fittings, ???.) you have either an internal leak in the steering motor piston o-rings up front or a problem in the steering valve under the dash or possibly both.

Tractors that used the many different 404 John Deere engines were 4010 (with larger replacement sleeves and pistons) 4020, 4320, 4520, 4620, 7020, 4230, 4430, 4630, and the 4040. The 4040 was the last John Deere Ag tractor to have the 404 engine it. Reverse, not so much. Then slide the outer quadrant back in and if possible, add an extra washer behind the snap ring to remove excess slop in quadrants. Rod #24 should not need adjustment if shifting was ok before the other rod broke. When this tractor was evening used daily we never had any trouble with the steering. Now that it only gets used very little we have steering trouble. Is this problem in the steering column or would it be in the pump?
